When you put moisturizer on your face each day, do you think you’re taking good care of yourself? Before learning the truth about parabens, I thought so, too.

Earlier this year KBS’s TV program “Sponge” put a spotlight on parabens. Parabens are a common preservative in all kinds of cosmetics from shampoo to makeup. In my house alone I found 18 out of 20 products contained parabens, including popular and inexpensive brands like Skin Food and premium brands like Kiehl’s and Lancôme.

What is the danger? According to a recent study by the University of Reading, parabens confuse your hormones and increase the risk of breast cancer. The European Union already forbids the use of parabens in baby products.

To minimize our risk, we need to avoid products with parabens. Buying organic cosmetics is generally a good way to go. Fortunately, popular brands like The Body Shop and Beyond have begun making paraben-free products. If you want to protect yourself, start by checking the ingredients label on your cosmetics.
